So much intellectual dishonesty.

How many prisons in the US are waterboarding their prisoners?

Re: ‘A Landmark Day for Torture Disclosure’

"As long as CIA agents could convince themselves they were not deliberately inflicting severe pain or suffering on detainees, they were free to do virtually anything in their questioning of suspected terrorists,"

Isn't that the call sign of being a sociopath? Convincing themselves? What checks were in place? What impartial witnesses? Suppose an agent had a bad day? Had some personal connection? A Nazi just following orders? A George Costanza "It's not a lie if you believe it". This administration has opened a can of rotting maggots that have infected the Body Republic.

Re: ‘A Landmark Day for Torture Disclosure’

Actually if you had read the Atlantic article a couple years back you would have found that the US Military interrogation techniques were much harsher then was the CIA. In fact the CIA refused to partake in these interrogations and packed up and went home.

I think you folks have watched too many movies over the years.

After reading the memos released it is my conclusion that all Jails and prisons in the United States fall under the strict definition of torture and therefore our Prison and jail system is unconstitutional and should be completely disbanded throwing all the residents back into the general populace until such time as the US can redo our penal system so that we are not engaging in torture of our prisioners under our control.

Re: ‘A Landmark Day for Torture Disclosure’

No, I don't think that. Clearly you do.

But this is one issue that isn't negotiable for me. To engage in an illegal act---one that had always before then been considered so---in the interest of 'safety' is an act of cowardice that betrays the principles of freedom on which this country was founded. There is NO justification (even setting aside the substantial number of intelligence officials who testified before Congress that this ISN'T a good way of getting reliable information).

Re: ‘A Landmark Day for Torture Disclosure’

Do you think that maybe……… just maybe, since we use waterboarding in the training of our own special forces and since it has been a hazing ritual at a number of colleges, that the Justice Department decided it didn’t cross the line of “torture”.

Could there have been a few lawyers in the Justice Department who weren’t driven by sadistic pleasure, but were actually concerned with the safety of the country and wanted to authorize the most effective methods without crossing the line?
