His optimism that the Iraq war would be short-lived and his plan to achieve victory in Iraq without telling us what that victory looks like. He says it's possible to achieve that victory in four years, but without goals he sounds just like Bush.

I'm very suspicious of politicians who suddenly do an about face from previous positions during a campaign season. Everyone expects politicians to say one thing during campaigns and then not keep their promises.

So, what has McCain done in the past to actually achieve what he claims he wants to do in this speech?

That's the standard.

Re: John McCain Looks Back From 2013 So…

I hope that everyone will give McCain a fair hearing by reading the speech, particularly the second half of it. The first half does come off a bit overly optimistic to me- he does try to start off by saying he realizes that it all might not work out quite this well but these are his end goals- but it still doesn't quite work IMO (though I certainly agree with most of the goals.)

But the second half of the speech is what I think it's important for anyone who opposes Bush to read; if McCain means what he says there, then there's no way to believe Obama's statements about McCain representing a third Bush term. McCain basically repudiates almost everything about the way Bush has conducted his presidency- from signing statements to partisan use of the veto to overreaching on the interpretation of Executive power in the Constitution.

So the question is, if anyone who opposes those things about Bush doesn't take McCain at his word that he won't govern that way- on what evidence do you judge McCain?

Re: John McCain Looks Back From 2013 So…

Yeah, yeah, yeah... there's all that hope from McCain. While I like Utopia, McCain's own policies in the past have prevented us from achieving some of what he wants to do in that nice speech.

Yawn.
