I believe it would be going too far (though some, like Shaun on this site, would probably try, nevertheless) to equate McCain with Custer. Bush and Custer, Iraq, hmmm, might be possible. "Leave that Gatling gun at headquarters! We won't need it along the Big Horn. There won't be more than a handful of redskins there."

Sometimes a low rank at a service academy is indicative of someone who likes to make their own rules. See for example Last in Their Class: http://www.amazon.com/dp/15... Many innovators come from the lower ranks. Of course, not all of them "innovate" successfully (e.g. George Custer).
