As long as our leadership is shown "due deference", the press is cowed into a complacent stance, there is no accountability for manipulating our nation into war with forged evidence, and the head of our justice system willingly bows to the politically powerful, we will continue down the path towards becoming a banana republic.

The essential question is... to what extent are we in danger of becoming a banana republic ourselves -- and how can we avoid it?

We started the leap toward Banana Republic when we elected Reagan and we will complete it when we elect McCain.

I have a very conflicted view of our dealings with our neighbors in Central and South America. Maybe someday I'll write a book, which I'm sure no one will read. But the bottom line is this... you think we're politically polarized? Check out Central and South America. Then check out the causes. There are many, but many of those might elucidate why we are becoming more polarized in our own country. The essential question is... to what extent are we in danger of becoming a banana republic ourselves -- and how can we avoid it?
